"Colonial Research "

Did your ancestor live in one of the Original Thirteen Colonies? Were they here before the Revolutionary War? Each colonist came to the "new world" for different reasons and each colony was different. They came for both religious and economic opportunities. The Southern Colonies, Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Georgia were rural, with planters and farmers. Besides English immigrants there were Scots, Scots-Irish, Germans and Africans. Find out what records are available and where they are, so you can learn about your Colonial American Ancestors.

"Headline DNA: Helping to Solve True Crime"

Since retirement in 2020 Laura is excitedly devoting more time to her genealogy business. It's so rewarding helping others enjoy the excitement and tremendous fulfillment of learning about their own family heritage.

Laura has a Certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University and is a member of the Genealogical Speakers Guild. She was elected to the Board of Directors of the Illinois State Genealogical Society. At the Town and Country Public Library in Elburn, she was the History and Genealogy Manager and help them to open their Lawrence J. Martin Heritage Center.

A long-time dream came true with the launch of Willowtree Research Genealogy Services in 2013. In 2014, I completed the Boston University "Certificate in Genealogical Research" program and am now a proud BU Gen certificate-holder (OL 14). Eventually, ticked a box on my 'bucket list' employed as History and Genealogy Manager at a local library. In that role I oversaw the creation and opening of their Lawrence J. Martin Heritage Center. Along the way I've served on several genealogical boards, including as a Director and Newsletter Editor for the Illinois State Genealogical Society.

"Using Probate Records for Genealogical Research"

Is there a relative who never had any children of their own, had no siblings and died owning enough property to require a probate or an estate settlement?

If so, the records of that settlement may be particularly interesting. The deceased person’s heirs-at-law typically would have been their first cousins or their first cousin’s descendants. Even if there was a will, these heirs-at-law typically would have had to have been notified of the probate. Those records could help determine relationships and indicate where people were living at the time the relative died.

Estate or probate records would typically be filed at the local court level.
